Edwardian 1920's fur lined & trimmed winter overcoat size 40

Edwardian 1920's fur lined & trimmed winter overcoat size 40

For sale here we have an extremely rare ( we've never seen one) genuine fur lined, astrakhan collar overcoat from the Edwardian period, possibly early 20's. This is the style of coat famously worn by Winston Churchill right through the 20's and 30's. You do sometimes see older coats with astrakhan collars added on top of the originals but this cut of coat is specifically and originally like this, with a progressive shawl collar. The fur lining was also original with very fine stitching, including the fur in the sleeves.

As a side to this advert it seems that he had three coats. The earliest has no astrakhan cuffs and a button hole closure. However, it has identical pockets and the buttons line up exactly with the same places on the pockets if you draw a horizontal line. The second and third coats had loop style asymmetric fasten, one with cuffs, one without. Potentially you had one with fur lining and one without....or... the cuff detached.

In addition to the similarities of these coats to the example offered here there is the puckering at the shoulder seams and wear marks near where the loops are on the collar fur. We'd suggest that the coat we have is from the same manufacturer and same period as the first of his coats, due to the cuff seams, pocket shape and height, button alignment with the pockets and wear characteristics. The coat also has velvet lined pockets.

The coat, when we bought it, was complete but the fur was rotten in places and beyond repair so we took the step of removing it all. Behind this we can now see all the amazing work that went in to building it. Supplied with the coat is the original wadding from the collar, a same shape collar but one which is smaller than the original so maybe only of use as a template for shape. We are also supplying a large piece of astrakhan in order make a new collar. In terms of the lining the coat will be supplied with a large size ladies rabbit fur coat which is a very good match for shape and size. This coat will be slightly small in the body so you may want to ass a strip of wool or viscose lining at the edges and of course needs the collar trimming off. The sleeves could literally go straight in which would negate the need for any stitching at all. However... being ladies the coat is small in the bicep area and I think if you are athletic you may find them too tight. In that case you would want them sewn in separately to the body and a split put in the upper arm. Or of course you could reline the whole thing in a viscose or Silk . We have a friend who could do this work but not for a while so are offering it presently as is.

Lastly... we bough this coat not far from Churchills home, it's the right size ( quite large for the time ), is very likely from the same manufacturer and is from the same period. No way of saying anything beyond this but may have some historical significance, even if it is just an acquaintance.

Condition - Complex but in essence the wool and pocketing is excellent, just a repair to the lowest button hole period ( Churchill always had the lowest button fastened making that a weak point.
