For sale here is a rare early century velvet smoking jacket in a heavy silk material, unlike anything available now and in a really good looking dark blue. The lining is typical of the time in that it is cotton and with a fine weave, as are the sleeves. The lapel obviously either needs a patch around the inner neck or replacing ideally but may not actually be original itself looking at the stitching. The jacket also features a clever little detail in its fastening. It is effectively a fly front, like an overcoat. Meaning that the button hole is hidden and no button seen. Quite a unique detail.
One fashion at the early part of the 20th century was a distinct cutaway below the button, on evening wear. This is actually pretty rare to see outside of fashion plates but this is in that style. Having looked at fashion plates more closely it seems that this cutaway was more a fashion at the end of the Victorian era and so the jacket may well date from 1890-1900
