For sale here is a very special item from Hawkes, (much) later of Gieves & Hawkes fame. At this point they were on Piccadilly but of course later they were a Savile Row tailor for over a century in different forms. This is the earliest dated item we have had and ever seen and of course the oldest Hawkes item. The date itself looks to say either 1 / 9 / 95 or perhaps 9 / 9/ 05. Or perhaps it doesn't indicate any date but either way the style and address tell you that the item is pre 1912, as that was when Hawkes bought No. 1 Savile Row.
The coat features the high fastening neck synonymous with the turn of the century, basket weave covered buttons, storm cuff, fastening collar, full hand stitching and canvassing, two internal pockets and blanket wool lining. I'm sure we don't need to stress what a find this is too much but its certainly the oldest dated item we've seen in 15 years of trading, and from probably the best known and oldest tailoring house.
Measurements
Sleeve - 27
Shoulder - 18
Length - 39
Chest - 19.5
Fit - A 37 reg for riding assuming you want a longer sleeve. In jacket measurements it would be a 37 long. This is assuming a light layer underneath. If a thick waistcoat is worn and you like the long sleeve then its a 36 reg.
Condition - Excellent for the age. The middle button hole could do with resewing, the blanket lining needs patching and there is of course discolouration to the inner lower areas. The coat is in remarkable condition in the main though.
